The Steps to Developing Your Book:
1. Contact us about your book project. For a cost estimate we will need specifications. This includes, the desired appearance, dimensions, page number estimate, number of books to be printed, use of illustrations, etc.
2. We will look at your project and what it entails and offer an estimate for design, layout and liaison with the best printer. A separate estimate for illustration services in b&w or color can be obtained upon request. A non-refundable $50 deposit for estimates, should be included with your materials, and will be credited toward layout and design fees if you decide to go forward with production.
*A note on the cost of this process. Estimates take time. Even if you decide NOT to develop your book with us, this estimate will help you get a picture of what your project entails and the potential costs. We pride ourselves in helping authors develop sharp, professional-looking books. No matter how great the content, a poorly designed book will not appeal to bookstores or readers. (i.e. Staple bound or plastic spiral books are difficult for libraries and stores to display and affect their purchasing.) You put a lot of time and energy into writing your book, make it look the very best it can. It will be reflected in your sales and purchase price.
3. In addition to the work we do developing your book, we will find estimates for the best possible printing price from a quality printer and submit estimate to you.
4. At this point you decide whether to go forward with the book. If costs and deadlines are acceptable you sign a book development agreement and return it with a nonrefundable retainer of $250 to get started. This will, of course, also be credited toward the final layout and design fees.
5. You include your final copy-edited* manuscript in a Microsoft word (PC or Mac) file, burned on a CD-R disc (no floppy discs). Email arrangements can be made if necessary.
*Copy-edited means the book is absolutely complete; editing is done, typos are corrected, etc. If the book is ready for production and then you decide to rewrite or re-edit, the cost of re-doing layout is the same as the first time. Make sure you are ready for this stage! (Small typo corrections require no additional fee.)
6. Illustrations or photos need to be supplied with the manuscript. Send them as tiffs at 300dpi resolution minimum burned on a CD. If you cannot supply tiff, scans are $20 each. Photoshop repair of photos or illustrations is $50.00/hour.
7. When we have all the final materials we will layout and design sample pages for your approval. When approved, we complete the layout.
8. We will send you the first-draft of the complete layout for you to look over. It is not uncommon, at this point, for the author to want to make minor changes. There is no additional charge for this. If, however, the author wishes to make extensive content corrections requiring layout changes an additional $15 per page will be charged.
9. When final layout is approved, we deliver your book to the printer and oversee printing quality. The balance of fees are due at this time.
10. Books are shipped to you directly from printer via insured UPS at your expense.

The Cost of Your Project:
The cost for the design and layout of your camera-ready project is generally $15.00 per page for books of 75 or more pages. If your book has a multitude of photographs, illustrations and callouts on every page, the fee will be higher and will be reflected in your estimate. Please note that these charges do not include cover design.
Children's picture books (32 pages) require graphic and text manipulation and the minimum fee for these projects are $650.00 for layout and design ($20 per page).
Any additional graphic manipulation and placement including Photoshop work and illustrations is $50/hour.
Cover design and layout ranges from $200 for a simple cover on up. This reflects the general $50 /our graphics fee. Full color, cover Illustrations start at $500. Covers can wrap around and include binding and back of book. This, again, reflects the general $50/hour graphics fee.
